thanks for nothing, oprah.

so everyone’s thanking oprah for making 2010 ‘the year childfree went mainstream‘. really? does oprah really have to take this one, too?

ok look. i’m not going to pretend i ever watch oprah. i have no idea why she gets touted as the queen of the childfree. the last time i checked, oprah was heralded by the soccer mom. she’s every housewife’s best friend. honestly, how much cred can she really bring to the childfree lifestyle?

on the slight upside, childfree is apparently becoming mainstream. and hallelujah for that. but it doesn’t mean we don’t have a very far way to go, friends. i still can’t talk about how much i enjoyed reading my new book on christmas morning around my child-bearing friends. and i certainly don’t seem to have any excuse for being exhausted at the end of the day – it’s not like i had to pick up the kids after school and make them all dinner, and bathe them, and put them to bed, and do their laundry, and pack their lunches before i could even change into my comfy clothes, after all.

no, there remains a certain level of un-overlookable unfairness.

i, for one, am looking forward to the day childfree truly is mainstream. that will be the day i’m not expected to feel guilty about every single enjoyable aspect of my chosen, childfree life. c’mon, oprah. let’s see you pull that one off.
